PROJECT
Introduction to Using a Design Mindset was developed as a prototype online version of successful F2F versions delivered by my colleague, Jeff Kupperman, and me. We partnered with Katrin Robertson of WholeMindDesign to develop and deliver the online course.
CHALLENGE
Create an online version of a workshop that affords participants the same rich activities and connection to others that the F2F version provided.
DESIGN
I co-developed the content and activities and co-facilitated delivery of the following workshops:
- Designing for Playful Learning
- Designing for Engagement
- Designing for Social & Emotional Learning
- Designing for Organizational Change
- Designing for “Pick Your Own Challenge”
Each workshop, and the online course, included a set of Design Mindset CARDs. The CARDs were developed by Jeff and me as a tangible representation of the approach to problem solving we were engaged in during all of our work.

and the Online Course
STRUCTURE
The LMS used for this course was Canvas.
The course was broken into weeks based on the sub-set of the Design Mindset CARDs being introduced. Each participant in the course (re)designed an everyday routine.
Week 1: First Steps (March 22-28)
Week 2: Discover (March 29-April 4)
Week 3: Frame (April 5-18) [extended due to participant feedback]
Week 4: Imagine (April 19-25)
Week 5: Prototype & Engage (April 16-May 2)
Week 6: Reflect (May 3-May 10)
Final Course Reflection and Feedback Form (due May 15th)
EXAMPLE COURSE ACTIVITY
This activity was designed as a way for participants to engage creatively online and introduce themselves to each other. It is a quick way to practice careful observations and making creative connections. I developed it based on a version used in F2F workshops.
- Visit the “Image/Quote” page on the Institute for Innovation in Education website.
Each time you refresh the page you will receive a new pair comprising a random quote and image card. - Take a screenshot of your quote and image card pair.
- Think about how the image and quote might be related.
- Visit our Image/Quote Activity Google Doc (link removed).
- Post your screenshot and along with it, post the connection you have made.
- Along with your screenshot and connection, share a brief introduction to yourself (or a link to where your introduction can be found).
I used my dog Louis Vuitton as an avatar for my online course this semester to great acclaim! He “delivered” the mid-week check-ins as a Voki. I also had him write a fairly academic blog post on leading learning theorists and then created a rap song as a summary using CreateRaps. I managed to integrate fun into my course thanks to your course!
