Introduction to Social & Emotional Learning was designed to introduce educators, learning support staff, and youth workers at EMU Bright Futures to social and emotional learning.
CHALLENGE
Work with a new online instructor to develop an asynchronous course based on SME and instructor developed content. Develop all course modules, media/graphics, and assessments. Provide technical support for the instructor as needed.
DESIGN

STRUCTURE
Module One – Learning Objectives
- Define social emotional learning and discuss how it relates to the role of professionals working with youth in education settings.
- Identify knowledge, attitudes, and skills that relate to SEL (what is considered SEL, and what is not).
- Explain why SEL is important.
- Discover how SEL is already present in your day-to-day interactions with others.
Module Two – Learning Objectives
- Recognize the research support for social emotional learning.
- Value the importance of using, and teaching, social emotional skills.
- Paraphrase and explain each of the six domains of social emotional learning (from Thrive Guide).
- Interpret situations and apply vocabulary from each domain to describe behavior.
Module Three – Learning Objectives
- Identify what the six domains look like in practice.
- Employ vocabulary from the six domains to describe situations presented in video or text.
- Explain how each domain translates into key experiences for youth and practices for staff.
Module Four – Learning Objectives
- Review definitions, key youth experiences, and staff practices for the six SEL domains.
- Demonstrate knowledge by applying the SEL domains to a provided scenario and personal experience.
I’m super impressed with the online SEL course. I feel that it’s providing a solid first touch for the new staff and an opportunity for a deeper dive for the more veteran crew. That balancing act is tough to pull off, and I think you’ve done it quite well.
